This college is not only one of initially established departments, but also the most influential college with strong capability of teaching and research. Presently, there are more than 30 teaching staff, including 8 professors, 12 associate professors, 6 doctors & post—doctor, 12 masters, a leader for provincial—level key subject, a winner for talents in western China, 2 teachers who obtain special allowance for experts given by State Council. During recent years, the college undertook over 100 research and won many prizes as national and CQ excellent accomplishment prizes. Also, it is the board of directors China's Geography Academy, China's Geography Information System Association and Geography Teaching Seminar of China's Education Association.

There are 3 teaching—research rooms, 2 research institutes, reference rooms with over 20,000 collections of books, CQ key studies for humanities and geography, CQ key experimental laboratories for application and study of geography information system.

Its basic geography laboratory has been judged and considered to be qualified by CQ basic laboratory. Meanwhile, its magazine “Geography Education” which distributes to the public has been judged as a national excellent magazine for years running.

At present, it offers geography science and information system for full—time undergraduates, master degrees given in “humanities and geography” and “regional economics” and theory of curriculum and instruction.
